WOOLWORTHS DOUBLE BAY PARKING AND SAFETY
Double Bay is growing and a cornerstone development for this growth is Kiaora Place with its new Woolworths, library, commercial areas and specialty retail. The Woolworths Double Bay car park is at the centre of this new development.
But this growth also puts more demand on our roads which struggle at the best of times. Whether you are a local business owner, a shopper, a resident or a visitor, if you are driving you want to avoid congestion; and, if you are walking you want roads that you and your children can safely and easily cross.
This website focuses on the safety impacts of the Woolworths Double Bay car park, as accessed via Court Road (Anderson Street), Patterson Street and Kiaora Road. Minimising congestion and assuring pedestrian safety is good for business and the community, and although the car park was designed and approved with 5 entrance lanes and 5 exit lanes across the 3 access streets, it has since been restricted to 3 entrance lanes:
-
the Court Road entrance (Anderson Street) is kept shut
-
the Kiaora Road twin entrance lanes were reduced to a single lane.
These restrictions are having impacts beyond the RMS prescribed safety limits for local streets and Woollahra Council's own traffic flow controls. Your safety is more at risk than it should be and your access is more congested than it should be.

So, Court Road traffic is now being forced into Patterson Street?
Yes, the Court Road (Anderson Street) access has been designed and built as a two-way access to support the efficient function of the car park but a door is kept shut at the request of the Double Bay Residents Association (DBRA), headquartered in Court Road. These community leaders insisted that their neighbours in Patterson Street, Kiaora Road and Manning Road must carry their burden of the traffic from the Woolworths Double Bay carpark, which is owned and managed by Woollahra Municipal Council. Council has so far refused to correct the matter even though the JRPP confirmed that such matters are in their control.

My community priority is: "...all traffic flowing down Manning Road from the Bondi Junction direction would turn into Court Road and not Patterson, causing enormous problems for every Court Road resident....

My community priority is: "Define Court Road as a local road.....close Anderson Street.....only use Anderson Street as an exit.....restrict Anderson Street exit to 7am and 7pm.....No heavy vehicles to use Court Road....
